One thing we can tell you right here, right now is that you’ve made one of the best decisions ever. Your child will now be able to learn karate and embark on a spectacular journey of self-discovery and character development with us! We will help him or her in developing a strong inner sense of self-discipline and physical strength. These qualities will remain with them every step of the way as they grow into responsible adults and established figures in their respective communities. Feeling the excitement? Well, we karate trainers and operation staff here at Focus Martial Arts are definitely feeling the KICK!
Now, before you send your kids off to their first kids’ karate class with us, you’ll need to make sure that they’re geared up, both physically and mentally for the lessons to come. We bring you some useful tips and reminders that will help you prepare your child well for their first day at the Focus Martial Arts karate centre.
First Step – Booking Your Child in for the Correct Karate Class
Our general advice would be that you make sure you’ve booked your child in for the correct session. Make sure there is ample time to get to and from the classes if the centre is more than a 10 minutes drive from your residence. We would also suggest that you not schedule any other physically challenging activities on the same day as their first lesson. This will give them the extra time to get to know their peers and karate teachers better. You don’t want to rush the kids on the first day since we’ve often seen the student’s enthusiasm drop for the rest of the karate season due to this.
In fact, try to do the opposite and be super-early! Plan your day so that the kids arrive at the venue at least 10 minutes prior to the beginning of their session. This way they get that extra time to socialize, make some friends, and get to know our instructors better. We’d also suggest you ask your children to go to the toilet beforehand to avoid disruption during the class.
Building Enthusiasm by Reading about Karate with Your Child
Now, your son or daughter may have already been exposed to martial arts in some form or another before their first karate 4 kids class at our centre. This may have been at a birthday party, activity centre, or school. Nevertheless, if a significant amount of time has passed since that incidence or your child is completely new to the practice of karate, it’s a great idea to mentally prepare your child for the karate classes at our centre. You can easily do this by simply talking to them about the art. Browse the web for a few nice videos of children enjoying karate or show them the Focus Martial Arts academy’s colourful kids karate website.
A great way to build up their excitement and enthusiasm for the first lesson at our karate school for kids is to read up about karate with them! Find a nice book appropriate to your child’s age. After all, karate is the popular martial art form that teaches its pupils self-discipline and self-defense through ancient Okinawa poses, actions and movements. Each technique of self-defense in karate has been invented and polished several hundred years ago by well-known influential Chinese martial arts sportsmen.
Literally, karate refers to ‘empty hand’ as it involves the use of the whole body, feet, and hands as a weapon of self-defense. In its core, karate has more to it than mere physical and mechanical movements. The intense dedication and training that karate students go through cultivates their mind, focusing it on the development of the person as a whole, which are character, body, and mind. All skills taught at the Focus Martial Arts karate for kids centre come from the traditional art form. We at the Focus Martial Arts centre have developed a specialised curriculum to take the very best of various martial arts and combine them into what will work for a child.
Dressing Right for the First Karate Class
If they haven’t got their karate gear already, most children will be wearing track pants and a comfortable t-shirt to their first karate class.Even the act of picking out their outfit for the big day in advance together can help build enthusiasm for their first karate kids lesson. And that’s exactly what you want! To avoid that frantic dash on the morning of the first karate class, wash, dry, and iron up your kids’ socks, pants, and t-shirts for the day. There’s just this divine feeling in wearing freshly pressed, clean clothes to your first karate class.
Learning how to correctly put your uniform on and tie your belt can be a little daunting for any new karate student. Our karate instructors are more than happy to teach not only your child, but also you as the parent, the correct way to keep that belt tied nice and tight, so it won’t fall off. It is the extra detail and extra student care that makes Focus Martial Arts stand out compared to other karate places as a fun, family-oriented sporting club!
More about the Structure of Our Kids Karate Classes
Each karate class for kids at the Focus Martial Arts centre follows a basic format that begins with a formal traditional bow-in and warm-ups. This is followed up with basic karate movements, and drills on the foundation skills taught in week 1 to 3. After that, the students get into the bulk of the lesson, which is the planned lesson of the day. The kids karate instructor teaches them a main lesson and supplementary skills that have to do with either practical applications of the technique, drills, or self-defense, depending on which part of the course they are at. Followed by a discussion on one aspect of character development and how they can apply that at home, at school and in the Focus Martial Arts training club.
The conclusion of each of our karate classes for kids is marked with a formal bow to bid respectful adieu to the instructor and the sport till they resume their practice in the next class. As you can easily see, every aspect of our kids karate classes integrate elements that re-enforce self-respect, self-discipline, and maturity in your children. In particular, boys tend to enjoy the sport a bit more owing to its slightly masculine nature. Hence, we do encourage more young girls to enroll into our courses at the Focus Martial Arts academy. We promise your daughter will have a ball mastering our fun kids karate moves. It’s also an excellent opportunity to meet new people with similar interests and make new friends for life!
