(1:59) Hey!
Why did I start martial arts? I was working across the street at a company called Sigma and I looked over in this direction seeing the Focus Martial Arts sign and yeah, contacted Kezia and while I was asking her questions over the phone she insisted I popped in just to come and have a look which we did to help with my son who is on the spectrum and it just helped show discipline, commitment and dedication to something that we could all progress in and three years later, here we are. What drew me to this is the family aspect of Focus Martial Arts where they have a family class which was really good to interact with my boy and with like-minded people that were trying to go through the same things that we were going through as a family trying to get better at fitness. What sort of person I was before martial arts was shy, not confident and yeah, quite intimidated.

I started martial arts because I can grow my confidence and I can hang out with my friends and and I’m really cool. The person I was before I started, I was a bit shy but now I’m like the opposite. My goal is to be a black belt.
Other people should do martial arts because they can grow confidence and learn how to like focus and have fun. And obviously those extra confidence and all those are accessories. I think it’s an accessory but considering he’s so slim and probably he might get abused quite easily at school and everywhere so that he certainly needs something to protect himself to start with and then everything else comes as an added advantage.
So Eric was traded in for student of the month because he’s an awesome student. He always has the best attention in class, great focus, tries his best, asks any questions if he gets anything wrong and he’s just having fun even when he’s trying his best and it’s pretty cool to see him have fun with all his friends and do some great hip tosses and leg sweeps.

I started to focus on martial arts. She was really quite air-headed and could not have butterflies, couldn’t focus on anything. And now she is so much more dedicated.
When she sets her mind to something so good, it’s amazing really. I started martial arts to try something new and for fun. Before martial arts I was unconfident, unfocused, a bit air-headed.
And now I can focus on my work easily and I’m more confident when speaking in front of other people. Now I’m a really confident person and I can focus really easily. And my patience, especially with my siblings, has been much better.
It has helped me become more confident in myself and around other people. And it has helped me make many more friends. Martial arts helped me in school because I’ve been able to focus more in class.
And I’ve been getting more of my homework done on time. My next goal is to become black belt, hopefully by the end of next year. Other people should do martial arts because it’s a great community here.
And it’s lots of fun and a great life skill. Molly here was chosen for the Leader of the Month because we love her commitment to martial arts. She comes here, leads by an example with everything she does.
She continues to push to keep on grading. She’s got a great black belt attitude. She’s awesome with the kids.
She’s great vibes, but she also disciplines them a little bit. Doesn’t let them be naughty to her. She’s a great role model and she helps out with everyone.
So she’s fantastic in classes and helping out with them. It’s clapping, perfect time.

All right, um, so Chloe got that student of the month this time around. A lot of people voted for her because she really does shine in doing her kids Karate classes. She put a lot of effort on that last tip when she’s going for her self-defence. She tried several times, didn’t you? But you tried a lot of times and she never gave up. And I made it hard for her, okay? I had to grab her, she had to get out with all her wrist locks and the wrist escapes. And I was holding on for dear life and she in the end got out for all of them. And the amazing amount of discipline she had to get that was amazing. If I got hurt I would cry and now I don’t really. I feel definitely, I’ve always seen that she enjoys coming to Karate classes because she likes kicking stuff. She likes burning the energy and punching the bags and everything like that. She has become more resilient. She has become a bit tougher when she gets hit or when something goes against her. She does stay on for more. She does stay stronger and she does keep kicking on really.

I started martial arts when I was eight, almost five years ago. I am red belt three. Well, kids martial arts classes have given me a lot of self-confidence, and I’m a lot fitter, and I know how to defend myself now. Hopefully I’ll go for my black belt by the end of this year. One of my friends was getting beaten up by two other guys, and I went in and defended him from them and got him to the office without him getting too badly hurt. And then when I was walking out of the office, one of them confronted me and punched me in the side of the face, and I was able to defend myself from him until teachers got there. No one’s picked on us since then. Lyndon is a six-year-old that goes to Focus Martial Arts here. He’s autistic, and he can’t sit still at all. I am his reading tutor. I teach him how to read on the weekends. It’s going well. He’s much better at reading now than he was. Before he couldn’t even, well, he could only read his own name. He’s able to fairly confidently read most of a book, a small, easy book, but it’s a lot better than what he was at before.

BFF a couple of years now, about two and a half. I was actually encouraged a lot by the staff here and also my kids were started and so I thought I’d also join in adult martial arts classes and have an activity that I could do with them. I think it’s been really good, it’s been working a different part of my brain as well as doing, you know, different exercises to what we do at BFF. Are you proud of mum getting student of the month? Yeah. Have any of you guys got student of the month yet? No. Your mum beat you! Hello. How’s that? Showing you how to do it. Who’s going to get student of the month next? How much weight have you lost? I’m not sure but a fair bit. Well, I’ve already started practising my pattern for the next belt because patterns are the hardest and yeah, it’s one martial arts lesson at a time and one step at a time and I’m just going to keep going.
